PPG Manor HallManor Hall Flat has been the premium grade paint from Pittsburgh for many years.  Recently though, Pittsburgh came out with a new line of paint called UltraLast.  Manor Hall is the second-tier premium paint similar to Sherwin Williams Duration or Ben Moore’s  Regal Select.

                                       Coverage

I consider any paint that can cover a different color in two coats.   Rarely can any paint cover a different color 100% in one coat.  For that reason,  I don’t care if a paint covers 75% or 90% on the first coat.

With that said, Manor Hall covers reasonably well.  If the color change is the same or close to the new paint color, one coat may work.  No guarantees.

Manor Hall Flat covers similar to Duration Flat, but not as well as Regal Flat.

Workability

The workability of PPG premium paint will not disappoint.  The paint glides on at about 27″ with one dip of the brush.   I consider anything over 24″ to be good.   What is most impressive about the workability is how it glides.  Its ease in applying will help reduce fatigue and can increase productivity.   Many paints get sticky or drag quickly; Manor Hall Flat does not.

How Does Manor Hall Flat Touch-up

Most flat paints touch-up very well.  If you are more likely to touch-up dirt or stains than clean the surface, it is important to have paint that touches-up well.  Meaning when the paint spot dries, it becomes blends in and disappears.

However, it did not exactly disappear.  I know it is hard to see in this picture, but I can see where I touched up under the orange tape to the naked eye.

Touch-up – 8 out of 10.

I know on the YouTube video I gave it a 7 out of 10.  If you can’t see it on a photograph, then a 7 out of 10 is too harsh.

Washability and Durability

The washability and durability of Manor Hall Flat were very impressive.  I had no idea that it would have equal or better washability than any flat paint that I have used.   C2 Flat Paint and Emerald Design Flat both had similar washability, but I think the Manor Hall handled cleaning the best.

The durability was equally impressive.  After I wiped the walls down with clean water to get the cleaning residue off, there was no burning or alteration of any kind to the walls.

On the other hand,  Emerald Flat has significant burnishing where I cleaned.  C2 Flat performed much closer to Manor Hall.

Is Manor Hall Flat Self-Priming?

I don’t know of a flat paint that is not self-priming for covering spackle spots, and this paint is no exception.

Self-Priming 10 out of 10

That is an easy score, but how about the overall value at $55.00 per gallon?

Value

To determine the value, we need to weigh the price tag of the paint with its benifits.

Where would I recommend using Manor Hall Flat?

Any place where washability is important, with a desire to have a little sheen as possible:

PPG Manor Hall

  • walls that are not perfectly straight
  • two-story foyer walls
  • Plaster walls
  • Painting over wallpaper

I would not recommend using this paint if washing the walls was not a priority if the cost was paramount.

  • Rental properties
  • Kids rooms (use a mid-grade eggshell such as PPG Speedhide or Promar 200)
  • Bathrooms
  • Kitchens
  • When wallpaper is removed

Because this paint has so many positive qualities, with touching-up being the only exception, the PPG Manor Hall Flat is a 9.5 out of 10.
