Is PPG Speedhide Eggshell a Good Value? Contractors say yes, and here's why.
Professional painters love PPG Speedhide because it doesn’t have any weaknesses. It’s a tremendous mid-priced paint that can compete with paints twice its price. Let’s evaluate PPG Speedhide Eggshell as we looked at Promar 200 and Super Spec.
Contractors have been buying PPG Speedhide Eggshell for decades. And now it is time for a professional review of PPG Speedhide Eggshell by master painter David Klappenberger.
We will put this paint through some rigorous tests and see how it compares to other mid-grade paints such as Sherwin Williams Promar 200 or Ben Moore Super Spec.
Coverage of PPG Speedhide Eggshell
The coverage of PPG Speedhide Eggshell was excellent. It covered a multitude of colors, including white and red in one coat.
Grade 10 out of 10
Workability 8 out of 10
The ease that paint spreads across is significant, considering that even with wall paint, a gallon of it can last several hours to all day. Paints that drag or are hard to work with can add 30% more time to a job and make the experience of painting unpleasant. Hard to believe -I know!
Speedhide Eggshell is an easy paint to work with, but it does not spread as far or as quickly as mid-grade paints. With one dip of the brush, I could spread about 20″ of Speedhide Eggshell before I needed to dip again. Promar 200 can extend approximately 24-28 with one dip.”

Durability
Not only was the Speedhide Eggshell able to handle the degreaser, but all the stains also disappeared. And when the wall dried, there was no evidence of cleaning. With many paints, burnishing of the walls can occur. This eggshell paint showed no alterations from the cleaning.

Speedhide Eggshell Review and conclusion
One complaint about Speedhide Eggshell, and most eggshell paints, if you touch-up walls instead of cleaning them, you may see a difference in sheen. When additional coats are applied, the paint sheen can increase slightly. The areas that get touched up are shiner, and the wall’s overall effect can look patchy.
The solution is to paint the wall from top to bottom or repaint the entire wall from corner to corner. Flat paints do not have this issue; all other sheens can.
Until recently, eggshell paints needed to be primed when painting bare drywall or repairing spackle spots. This process ensured even coverage. Today that is not always necessary. Painting contractors who use Speed hide Eggshell directly on the walls and skip the priming process altogether. What a time and money saver!
The value of this paint is fantastic. Painting contractors often can get this paint discounted to $25-$30.00. This paint has no substantial disadvantages, which is why contractors love using it.
